Musical Coding and Political Decoding in the Gaze of Empires: The Use of Music and National Writing in James Joyce's Dubliners

  • 摘要: 19世纪末期,在叶芝(W.B.Yeats)等知识分子的主导下,爱尔兰文艺复兴运动(Irish Literary Renaissance)方兴未艾。然而,乔伊斯敏锐地嗅到了弥漫于“文艺复兴运动”中的民族主义情绪。文学与政治的草率结盟极易形成把控意识形态的一元论绝对话语,藉此呈现的文艺作品也难免落入泥古虚幻的空洞俗套。作为一名流散欧陆的知识分子,乔伊斯却在文学创作的文化心理结构上恒久地归属于母国爱尔兰。在其早年创作的小说集《都柏林人》中,乔伊斯借助于文学文本包蕴音乐元素的通感艺术形式,喻指了那个时代爱尔兰动荡的政治文化生态,承载着青年乔伊斯对于民族复兴进路的追问与反思。概言之,乔伊斯在小说集《都柏林人》中对于音乐元素的多维度运用,彰显了其文学与音乐深度交互的创作实践与民族书写原则。以音乐为能指符号归纳特定时期的政治所指,乔伊斯把“双重殖民”的社会现状整合于都柏林人耳熟能详的音乐意象之中,并以此为镜,呈现都柏林大众民族精神麻痹的诸种模态,进而达到唤醒“瘫痪”的爱尔兰国民,打开耦合于爱尔兰民众深层心理结构中的国族意识之目的。
