          The Research Center for Comparative Literature and World Literature at Shanghai Normal University was founded by two well-known Professors of foreign literary studies, Wen ZHU (1911-1994) and Naichang ZHU (1929-2012). For the past decade, the center was led by: Professor Jingyao SUN (1942-2012), an expert on comparative literature; Professor Kelu ZHENG, an expert on foreign literary history; and Professor Xun SUN, an expert on East Asian literary relations. Through their efforts and the hard work of the entire academic team, in October of 2007 the Ministry of Education designated our Center a National Key Discipline.
        Our Center is now directed by Professors Yunhua LIU and Zhenwu ZHU (Directors of the National Key Discipline/ Director of master programs), Hong CHEN (Director of doctoral programs). The research branch leaders are Professors Yunhua LIU, Lihua SONG, and Zhenwu ZHU.


Research Branches:
        The branch of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory is directed by Professor Yunhua LIU. Key members include Professors Ming YAN, Ping LI, Associate Professor Hongchao WANG, Associate Professor Ivan RUVIDIC, Associate Professor Xi’an GUO, Associate Professor Yunfan YAO, Dr. Yanyan DENG (also serves as Academic Secretary), Distinguished Visiting Professor Martin KERN (Chairman of the Department of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, Greg (’84) and Joanna (P13) Zeluck Professor in Asian Studies), Visiting Professor, Dr. Yugen WANG (Associate Professor at the University of Oregon), part-time researcher, Dr. Keiko YAMAMOTO (Ph.D., The University of Tokyo). The office is currently working on compiling the Comparative Poetics and Comparative Culture Series.
        The branch of Sino-Foreign Relations of Literature and Culture is directed by Professor Lihua SONG. Scholars at this branch have been remarkably successful in their research at home and abroad. The department has three main research foci:
                (1) Relations between Christianity and Chinese literature, which includes Professors Yunhua LIU, Lihua SONG, Jianlong YANG, Associate Professor Jianxun JI, and Distinguished Visiting Professor Shixue LI (Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Academia Sinica, Taiwan).
                (2) Sino-Western Relations and Literatures, including Professor Ye SHI, Jing ZHANG, Associate Professor Weiwei FANG, Dr. LIM Hyebin and Dr. Peitong WU.
                (3) East Asian and Chinese Comparative Literature, including Professors Xun SUN, Minhua WENG, and Weiguo ZHAO. Professor Xun SUN and Professor Lihua SONG are currently involved in National Key Projects Literature Review and Study of East Asian Chinese Novels and Literature Review and Study of the Dissemination of Chinese Classical Novels in the West.
        The staff is working on compiling Sino-Western Relations between Literature and Culture Series.
        The branch of Foreign Literature and Translation Research, directed by Professor Zhenwu ZHU, includes the following key members: Dr. Hong CHEN (Professor of English Poetry and Ecological Criticism), Dr. Jianying LI (Professor of French Literature), Dr. Hongmin TIAN (Associate Professor of Russian Literature), Dr. Qingsong Wang (Associate Professor of American Literature), and Dr. Simon C. Estok from Sungkyunkwan University in Korea, our Center’s “Oriental Scholar (Chair Professor)” of Shanghai. The staff is currently compiling the History of Contemporary Foreign Literature Series.
        Our Center has compiled and published an extensive array of book series, including: A Collection of Chinese Novels in Vietnam (20 volumes); East Asian Chinese Novels Study Series (4 books); Foreign Literature History Series (6 volumes); Bilingual Textbooks for Liberal Arts Teaching at University (6 books). We also organize and publish two academic journals: International Comparative Literature (in both Chinese and English), editded by Professor Yunhua LIU and Shen YAO, and Forum for World Literature Studies (in English) edited by Professor Zhenwu ZHU.
